
The office of the Ombudsman was established by an Act of Parliament in 1997 as an independent investigative body, to investigate any administrative act of a prescribed authority against which a complaint is made by any person who claims to have suffered injustice as a result of maladministration. The head of the office is referred to as the Ombudsman.
The office of the Ombudsman started operations in 2000 with the appointment of the first Ombudsman Lawyer Francis A. Gabbidon who served in that capacity until 2007. The present Ombudsman is Justice Edmond Cowan a former Justice of Appeal and a former Speaker of Parliament.
